Real Estate
and
This Space For Rent pay homage to elements that are found
repetitively in Korea. They are
digitally manipulated C-prints illustrating the similarities between living
structures and the people that inhabit these structures. Although outsiders may
view these elements as unpleasant, the Korean apartment building and members
of the collective chaebol, they reflect not only the demand of a society leveled
by a history of conflict, but also the nature of Korean group mentality and
the family-oriented driving force behind the economy and politics of South Korea.
It is no accident that the term ‘dong’ in Korean means both building and neighborhood
and that ‘chaebol’ which is loosely defined as a multi-national business conglomerate
can be directly translated into business family.
